Housing Meeting about Rent Burdens in Baker City
You are invited to discuss the burden of housing costs with the Baker City Council on December 4, 2023 at 3:00 PM.
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss: (a) The causes and consequences of severe rent burdens within the city;
(b) The barriers to reducing rent burdens; and
(c) Possible solutions to reduce the number of severely rent burdened households within the city.
Baker City is a "severely rent burdened city" by state definition, meaning 25% or more of our community members are spending more than 50% of their household income on housing. An estimated 31.5% of Baker City residents are experiencing severe rent burden. This data comes from the American Community Survey data from 2021, and shows a significant increase from the same survey in prior years. An estimated 24.6% of the population was severely rent burdened in the 2020 survey and 25.1% of the population in 2019.
Written comments regarding community member experiences or ideas are welcome, please send those to the Planning Department at 1995 Third Street, Suite 131, Baker City OR 97814, or firstname.lastname@example.org on or before December 4.
